Churches
Grison, silex et calcaire donnent leurs belles couleurs aux églises du Cœur du Perche. La plupart ont été édifiées au XIe et XIIe siècles (période romane), et remaniées lors de la période de renouveau démographique et de prospérité, fin XVe / début XVIe siècles (adjonction de bas-côtés, tours et chapelles gothiques flamboyants). Aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles les décors intérieurs ont été profondément modifiés, avec la construction de retables et autels d’inspiration baroque, comme à Bellou-sur-Huisne, Condé-sur-Huisne, La Madeleine-Bouvet, Maison-Maugis, Préaux-du-Perche, Verrières, et Saint-Pierre-la-Bruyère avec ses tableaux remarquables.
Les amateurs de lumières pourront suivre l’évolution de l’art du vitrail : des plus anciens, (médaillons du XVIe siècle à Dancé et Maison-Maugis) aux plus modernes (verrières de Condé-sur-Huisne). Il faut aussi aller admirer les vitraux commémoratifs de la Première Guerre Mondiale à Préaux-du-Perche, Nocé et Rémalard.
Ne pas manquer la touche contemporaine des verrières réalisées par Paul Bony à Dancé et Berd’huis, et les vitraux signés Gabriel Loire à Verrières ou Lorin à Bellou-sur-Huisne.
Les amoureux de l’orgue iront écouter l’orgue de chœur construit en 1859 par les frères Damien à Rémalard et surtout l’orgue de tribune de Moutiers-au-Perche dont le buffet est daté de la fin du XVIe siècle.
Iron-rich sandstone, flint and limestone give their beautiful colours to the churches in the heart of the Perche. Most were built in the eleventh and twelfth centuries( in the Roman period) and re-shaped during the period of demographic revival and prosperity, end of 15th/ beginning of 16th centuries (the addition of aisles, towers and flamboyant Gothic chapels).
In the 17th & 18th centuries the interior décor underwent considerable changes with the construction of Baroque-inspired altars and altarpieces as found in Bellou-sur-Huisne, Condé-sur-Huisne, La Madeleine-Bouvet, Maison-Maugis, Préaux-du-Perche, Verrières, and Saint-Pierre-la-Bruyère with its noteworthy paintings.
Those who are interested in stained-glass windows can follow their evolution, from the oldest (16th century medallions in Dancé and Maison-Maugis) to the most modern windows in Condé-sur-Huisne. Also worth seeing are the WW1 commemorative stained-glass windows at Préaux-du-Perche, Nocé and Rémalard.
Do not miss the contemporary windows in Dancé and Berd’huis made by Paul Bony and the stained-glass windos signed by Gabriel Loire in Verrières and Lorin in Bellou-sur-Huisne.
Organ enthusiasts can go to listen to the choir organ in Rémalard built in 1859 by the Damien brothers and the gallery organ at Moutiers-au-Perche with its casing dated end of 16th century.
